Jade roller are the latest beauty tool to get people all excited—and for good reason. The little stone rolling device may not smooth out wrinkles, but it can definitely boost your complexion and give you that coveted glowy look we all crave. They also help to stimulate the lymphatic system (a network of vessels that transports fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells throughout your body to help rid of water, toxins, and other unwanted substances) by gently massaging the face. And because the stones stay cool during use, it restricts dilation of your blood vessels and helps to reduce redness, says Joshua Zeichner, MD, a board-certified dermatologist.

You can find them in a variety of shapes, sizes, and crystals—from rose quartz to amethyst to your classic jade. And since each type of stone is associated with its own spiritually healing properties, you can choose one that speaks to your soul. For example, rose quartz is said to promote love and self-care while amethyst helps with anxiety and depression.

The best jade rollers are typically made from real jade, a semi-precious stone that is naturally cool to the touch and doesn’t transfer bacteria like metal rollers or other plastic options. They’re also often encased in a protective shell or covered with a silky finish to prevent scratches and chips. They should always be clean before and after each use, as any dirt or bacteria can get stuck in the grooves of the stones.

If you have sensitive skin, you should test your tolerance to the tool before using it for longer periods of time or on a larger area of your face. It’s also better to apply your serum or face oil before rolling, as this will increase absorption and help you see results faster. And while it may seem counterintuitive, you should never use the tool on wet or damp skin, as this can lead to skin irritation and possible breakouts.

In addition to the above, a jade roller is an excellent de-puffing tool, especially if you’ve had a long night or woke up with extra water weight in your eyes and cheeks. You can even keep your jade roller in the fridge overnight and gently massage it all over your face and neck for an instant face-lift.

The key is to always be gentle with the tool and never irritate or over-exfoliate your skin. “You don’t want to move too fast or you can cause fine lines and damage your collagen,” explains Renee Rouleau, celebrity esthetician and founder of her own skincare line. To avoid this, she suggests starting at the base of your neck and working upwards. You should also be sure to lubricate your skin first with a facial oil or serum that has a lot of slip, as this will make the process easier and prevent tugging at your delicate skin.
