An airgun is a weapon that uses compressed gas to shoot projectiles. Airguns are also known as BB guns, pellet guns, air rifles or even dart guns. They’ve been around for centuries and have evolved into a popular recreational activity as well as a popular method of hunting and pest control.

There are many types of airguns available with a wide range of designs and powerplants to choose from. In general, however, an airgun consists of a reservoir for pressurized air that is cocked and held back by a spring. When the trigger is pulled, the spring actuates the piston and the air is compressed behind the BB or other projectile that is then projected from the gun’s barrel.

The most common type of airgun is a spring-piston model that works in a similar manner to traditional firearms. When the trigger is pulled, a piston is released that quickly expands the air volume that was standing in the compression chamber. This propels the BB or other projectile down the barrel and away from the gun.

Other types of airguns include those that use green gas, red gas and CO2. While these guns are not fueled with air, they do operate using the same principles as spring-piston models.

Most states and countries allow sportsmen to hunt small game and other pests with airguns. While some big game hunters may prefer to use a bow, an airgun can be effective at distances up to 150 yards or so. This is not considered to be an ideal range for game hunting, though, and hunters should consider the capabilities of their specific model of airgun before attempting to take a big game animal with it. airguns
